I’ve wanted to get hold of the new Nokia N82 for a while now to see if it would be the obvious choice for an upgrade to the trusted Nokia N73. Personally I’ve had my N73 for 15 months and its done me well in all that time, I only recently upgraded to the N95 8GB on 3UK, mainly because the N73 was looking tatty and 3UK didn’t do the N82.
So the question is “Would I have upgraded to the N82 if 3UK had it”, well
the answer is a great big “YES”.
Why would you upgrade to the N82? If you are like myself and loved your
N73, the N82 is the N73 on steroids. Everything has been pumped up on it, the
camera has been improved from 3.2MP to 5MP, the internal memory and RAM has been
increased, it’s got added Wifi and GPS, it has a 3.5mm Stereo Headphone plug, so
you can use your own headphones without the need for an adaptor and it has
built-in RotateMe, turn the N82 on its side and the screen orientation changes
automatically.
The increase in internal memory and RAM would have been enough to win me over as this was the No.1 pet hate I had with the N73, I was restricted to the number of applications I could have open at one time. Those days are gone now, as the N82 can handle anything you throw at it. You can even have apps running using the 3G connection and others using the wifi connection, totally awesome!
Only dislikes about the N82, well they are minor, but the removal of the
PEN key, I know you can do the same by holding the # key, but there are a number
of S60 apps designed to use the PEN key which makes it a pain to use (I’ve
manage to get round most of them, but I can’t see the reasoning for Nokia
removing it?) and the mini-USB connector on the N82 is different to that on the
N95 and N800/N810, so an extra cable to carry around if you want to connect to
your Laptop/PC.
Apps for the N82
The N82 software is S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 the same as the N95, so most apps will work on it. The only ones I’ve found so far not working are Yahoo!GO and Google Search. I’ve downloaded and installed nearly everything I had on the N95 8GB onto the N82 (well after I had a slight problem installing, but think that was down to me connecting via Wifi and at the same time downloading a 700MB movie via the N800). If you can’t find a N82 version of an application, just install the N95 or N95 8GB version.
What’s installed on the N82:-

There has been much buzz over the last few months on the different ways to view video files (FLV) from YouTube since Flash LITE v3.0 was released. I started using BySamir’s YT Player, moved on to emTube, then YouTube themselves released an application, but its MobiTubia which has won it for gerrymoth.
BySamir’s YT Player was basic, hopefully it will be improved, emTube has now been pulled at the request of YouTube themselves and as for the Official YouTube java application it just wont play sound on my N95 8GB or N73 and the picture quality is crap.
MobiTubia (Latest v1.76 Build 3 14/02/08) is my choice YouTube player at the moment. The layout and look of the MobiTubia application is very appeasing and I can save files and scan my memory card for FLV files I already have and play. You can also add a URL for a file from a different website like DailyMotion.
As for the future, I’m hoping we will soon be able to just play video files directly from the internet browser, if the latest Opera Mobile v9.5 will give us this, we will just need to wait and see.

My favourite application on my N73 has been updated to v2.0, so what has changed?
Well for one the "Running" & "Recent" tasks have been combined and you now have a "Favourites" when you move the joystick to the right. You can change the Settings to display just the Running or the Running & Recent when you open the Taskman up or you can easily switch between the two by pressing the PEN key.
If you start typing you will find the "Lookup & start" function, so if you want gmail start typing, g, m, etc..
The icon for Taskman has been given a revamp, but apart from that its the same great application its always been.
I'm always being asked by people to help them out after they have rebranded their 3UK Nokia N73 or N95 or N6120c only to find they can't download the 3 branded MSN or Skype or Slingplayer, etc..
Well to help all you guys & girls these should be the latest versions as of 11th December 2007:-
3MSN for N73
3MSN for N95
Skype for 3
Slingplayer for N73
Slingplayer for N6120c

Don't ask me for Y!GO or Y!Messenger, I've been unable to download and any versions I have found I've been unable to install on my N73, so I'm staying well clear of these apps until Yahoo sort themselves out and allow all to enjoy.
For YahooGO! version 2.0, extract both JAD & JAR files to a folder, ensure a Services connection to the internet and run the JAD file:-13/12/07: Scrub that, its an older version which then asks you to update and thats where I fall over.
