Google Maps with My Location (beta)
See your location on the map, with or without GPS. Save time and tedious keystrokes finding where you are, what's around you, and how to get there. Watch the video on the right to see how it works.
If you have a GPS-enabled device, this blue dot corresponds to your GPS location. At times, or if you do not have a GPS-enabled phone, you might see the blue dot surrounded by a light blue circle (as shown on the right) to indicate uncertainty about your location. Why the uncertainty? The My Location feature takes information broadcast from mobile towers near you to approximate your current location on the map - it's not GPS, but it comes pretty close (approximately 1000m close, on average). We are still in beta, but we are excited to launch this feature and are constantly working to improve our coverage and accuracy. The My Location feature is available for most web-enabled mobile phones, including Java, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, and Nokia/Symbian devices. Get more info on the My Location feature and supported devices, or discuss Google Maps and My Location with other users. |

Okay over the last month there has been all the hype about the 3Skypephone , but if you're not wanting to pay for another phone and/or contract, what's the alternatives on your existing phone?
If you are currently with 3UK network, if you take any of the X-Series add-ons you can get 'Skype for 3' for Skype to Skype calls only included, I noticed all new mix & match contracts now come with Skype included, but if you're not with 3UK netowrk, what can you do?
There are a few other applications which will allow you to use your Skype account to the full, well nearly.
The first is iSkoot application which is like the 'Skype for 3' application in that it dials a national number, but unlike the 3 version where the call charges are included this iSkoot application eats into your monthly call allowance. The one advantage the iSkoot app has over the 3 version is you can use SkypeOut and SkypeIn. This is a good app if you have loads of minutes in your monthly plan and want to call internationally or call 0800 numbers.
The next is Fring, I'd only use Fring if you have a unlimited data package on your account or access to wifi. Fring uses Skype in mostly the same way as you would use it on a PC over the internet. You can do Skype to Skype, SkypeOut, but not SkypeIn, you will only be charge for the data usage and the relevant Skype call charge. I've got X-Series on my 3 account, so use Fring to call 0800 numbers mostly for FREE.
Oh, unlike the 'Skype for 3' version both iSkoot and Fring can handle Skype Chat, so come on 3UK give us an update to 'Skype for 3'?

Simplicity is the only way mobile VOIP will catch on with the general mobile user.
3Skypephone is the first I think to really capture this and market it extremely well. You buy a £50 PAYG phone, press the SKYPE button, register with a username/password and away you go enjoying 4000mins free call time and 10000 chat messages (min £10 top-up required each month to use Skype services, but that £10 top-up can be used for normal calls, text or product buying like internet add-ons, music, ringtones, etc..)
I know loads of people who own a Nokia N95 and are amazed when I explain to them exactly what the phone is capable of (Instant Messaging, SIP calling, VOIP calling, Internet Radio, etc..) and then there are others who just don't what to pay for the extremely high data charges some of the networks charge. The likes of 3 with the £5pm X-Series unlimited data add-on is starting to get people using the mobile internet and will hopefully start the next generation of mobile voip users.
I've posted recently on the "Battle of the IM's" and how there are great applications like Fring, LCG Slick and Palringo which allow you to use the likes of MSN, Yahoo, AIM, ICQ, GTalk and Skype not just for instant messaging, but also calling and file sharing.
Until someone's brave enough to pump some cash into advertising their product to the general public, the only way people will be educated in the expanding usage of their mobile phone is by word of mouth or happening upon it while surfing the net.
Mark Guim @ thenokiablog has just posted on the latest accessory to be sent to him, the mobile video hat:
http://thenokiablog.com/2007/11/26/video-mobile-video-hat-for-watching-hands-free-video/
and I must say its probably not one I'd wear while on a bus or plane, but Marc has commented on one use for it, "The filthy swine".
Instant Messengers (MSN, Yahoo, AIM, ICQ, Google Talk, Skype), we all use at least one, well I use 5 different ones which is causing problems. The problem isn't finding one application which can do all, but which one to pick?
Now I've got my 3Skypephone, so don't need an app for skype at the moment, so I'll look at the others.
I've currently got installed on my phone the following apps which can all handle IM:
Fring
LCG Slick
Palringo
Windows Live Messenger (Only added cos I use for email, can only handle MSN)
I'm running out of space on my N73, so trying to free up some space on the phone and looking for one app to do all.
Fring

fring™ is a free mobile VoIP application that utilizes free WiFi or your mobile internet data plan to make free mobile internet calls and live chat (IM) to other ‘fringsters’ and PC-based services including Skype®, Google Talk™, ICQ, MSN® Messenger and Twitter.
fring offers benefits previously enjoyed only on a PC and empowers you to truly go mobile. You can make cheap international and local mobile internet calls, see who’s online before dialing with contact availability icons, live chat instead of SMS, chat in multiple conversations simultaneously, view conversation history and more! Plus, you can take all your fring, Skype, Google Talk, ICQ, MSN Messenger and Twitter buddies mobile and view them alongside your regular phone contacts, from one integrated and searchable contact list.
As fring automatically roams between WiFi and 3G networks, you can effortlessly login to recognized WiFi hotspots, smoothly gaining access to the best available network for optimal call quality and savings wherever you are.
fring bypasses traditional mobile voice and SMS text messaging
services by utilizing the mobile handset’s native internet connection.
fring does not require any dedicated hardware or airtime and works with

gerrymoth's thoughts
I really like LCG Slick (Current v0.34), it handles my MSN/Yahoo/AIM/ICQ, I can send text, nudge and send files (small files only for me, can send big files), but it doesn't allow you to call which is one of the great benefits on Palringo, but that can't nudge or send files, it can send pictures though. Oh and Fring is just let down my the fact it can't handle Yahoo or AIM, what the reason for this is I don't know. Fring would be a killer app if they added Yahoo and AIM.
So what one wins it for me? Well I don't use IM Calling features much, so the winner for me right now is LCG Slick.
But who knows what new features the others will add, so I may change my mind.
Now I must be totally losing my mind, maybe its staying up late looking for new applications, but I'd originally register with mymobilesite.net then removed the account, so once I'd created a new username I got this mobile web server application working right away.
Managed to use the Web Chat, see my Presence, Calendar, Contacts and access folders.
What I'd use this for in reality is escaping me at the moment, but it made me think Jaiku can see your presence and calendar, so must use the same methods, so why can't Jaiku be updated to allow you to chat with online Jaiku contacts directly from the phone? maybe security issues?, but hopefully there will be some great stuff to come?
What I'd like is one application where I can post my thoughts, chat with one or multiply users who are online, email, call, and share files.
Oh and the Web Server app for the phone takes up about 3.5MB of space, so getting a little low in internal memory, one reason I need to get a newer mobile, thinking about the N95 8GB or maybe the N82.
PS: Thanks to Jukka for taking the time out to comment on the previous posting.
